|Looking for:||Funds, volunteers to raise funds|
|Details:||Our community initiative launched a crowdfunding campaign on March 20, 2020 to help families in Antigua, Guatemala who lost their income as a result of the government-ordered shutdown to reduce the COVID19 pandemic. Our mission is to help children and their families, quite literally, survive this pandemic. We have distributed funds and grocery gift certificates to help families eat and meet their most urgent needs, such as medical care, medications, and rent.
Eighty percent of Antigua's economy depended on tourism. When the country closed its borders and shut down the economy, we learned that thousands of families instantly lost their sources of income. Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America where more than half of the population lives in poverty and suffers from malnutrition. As you can imagine, the loss of their income put them in a precarious situation, since most of the people here live from day to day, without money for emergencies.
Thanks to dozens of donors who have helped us, we have been able to help families for more than five months. We hope to be able to support them until they can return to work. We would appreciate $ 6,000 in additional donations to meet our current goal of $ 25K to help needy families in Antigua, Guatemala.
When we launched our effort in March, we thought that a month of support would outpace them, but we quickly realized that this crisis would last for many months. As we begin the sixth month of the pandemic, we continue to help families, but donations do not come as easily as in the beginning. If we do not raise more funds, our support for them will end in September, when there is still a great need. In total, we have helped more than 400 people, representing children, their parents and grandparents. Visit our GoFundMe page to learn more.
